As you know if you've read the latest ITL update, we're moving into the next book now. I'm having a great time with it, and I hope that you'll enjoy it, too!

Michelle, I'm sorry! When Lulu offered me publishing options and recommended the DRM version, I was like, sure, sounds good! I didn't realize that it would drastically change the file's readability. I'll look into fixing that if I can.
Pukku, I apologize. Right now, the CreateSpace, Lulu, and Amazon versions available are all I have. Eventually, ideally, I'll have a version of everything to suit everyone's needs. I'm sorry, y'all are way more versed in e-publishing than I am, so I'm not aware of the pros and cons of every version and how they work with various readers.
I think the main problem here is that a lot of people read e-books in different ways. Some people want PDFs and some want EPUBs and some people use Nook and some people want Kindle and some people don't use either but prefer Kindle formatting anyway.
Maybe it would help if you'd all let me know what works best for you, so that I can prioritize whatever suits the most people. Should I e-publish through Lulu? Should I publish for Kindle? Is there some other thing I should be doing altogether?
I have been waiting for this book to begin for quite a while and I can't wait to get to know the mysterious Mirotam! I'm so happy for Talin because now we will get to see another side of him. He's been unhappy for so long and even when he was with Hitari, he still had times when he had his guard up or had to second guess things. I can't wait to see Talin in a good relationship and then see Anosamin finally able to stop worrying so much. Great chapter!!!

ReplyDeleteRE: ebooks - I don't have a Kindle, I read either on my laptop or iphone (using Stanza or Adobe Digital Editions), so pdf or epub files are good for me.
(I had bought The Golden Goddess and Trent and Jason on paperback because I didn't know if there will be a lag time between the paperback and ebook).
However I do understand there are many, many Kindle users out there, so if it makes sense for you to publish on Kindle, then you need to do what's right for you.

DeleteMatthew, you shouldn't have to publish in multiple formats. There's a free program available for download that converts ebooks into other formats. It's called Calibre. It's very easy to use.

For the ebooks - anything but Adobe digital editions, I hate this platform. I tried converting 'Trent and Jason' and it so did not work.
ReplyDeleteThis week's chapter was exciting. I'm happy for Talin, particularly as I've started re-reading ITL from chapter one this week and am having to encounter Talin's pain with Hitari again. Talin needs some love.
Thank you, Matthew, you're a rockstar. As I'd said, I prefer pdf. As Amela mentioned, non-protected versions can be converted, so if you chose to go with any non-DRM version, people can just convert it to whatever they prefer.
ReplyDeleteI can absolutely understand why DRM would be attractive to someone self-publishing. I suppose one way of thinking about it would be to see if the new ebooks have been pirated or not. My understanding is that people more savvy than I can manage it regardless, so they might be out there already. In which case there might be less point in worrying about it. Or maybe that would be more reason to keep it as protected as you can? It is, obviously, your call.
Also, I'm all caught up now and cannot wait until next week! Yay! I adore Mir already. I kind of want to kick his sister though. Just a little kick, to dislodge her faulty thinking. I suppose the Siblings might have nicer methods. Hm, and now I'm imagining a conversation between her, Vade, and Selorin. I would hope Vade would be horrified and Selorin could say to him, 'see, that is how you sound about certain subjects.' ^_^
Matthew, I'm a little confused with your continued reference to Ilanosa as the God(ess)? who blessed Talin and is responsible for artistic talent. I thought that was Alanohi and that Ilanosa is connected to love.

Oops - as regards to the conversion, I hadn't realized that you published a DRM locked version of Trent & Jason. So, yeah, it can't be converted unless you're particularly tech savvy and know how to hack the lock. (which I don't). I'm just used to the non-DRM versions and being able to convert them to any format. (I'm not trying to make a comment for or against the use of DRM btw, just stating what I'm used to seeing) :)
